Are you feeling depressed?

Depression can come from many sources – loss of a loved one, loss of a job, fear about the future.

But where does it really come from?

In the 1970's, a computer scientist named Richard Bandler studied how language affects what we think and how we feel. He partnered with a psychologist, John Grinder, and developed a deep understanding of how our minds process and store information.

They discovered something amazing. Really I should not say that they "discovered" it, rather they formalized it. As early as the time of Shakespeare, it was known that how we feel about things is a choice -- "There is nothing either bad or good but thinking makes it so."

This quote, from Shakespeare around 1600 A.D., goes straight to the heart of the matter. And that is, that events, in and of themselves, have only the meaning we attribute to them – the meaning that we choose.

So if something has happened and you feel depressed, it is because you, either wittingly or not, have chosen to feel depressed.

Wow. The first time I heard this, I didn't believe it, either. And so I spent quite a lot of time researching and studying the stuff that Grinder and Bandler were talking about.

And it is TRUE!!!

It is pretty difficult, at first, to understand – and even harder to choose something else. Some people get stuck in a destructive cycle called the "lazy eight"; First, they get really depressed about something. But it is hard to stay depressed forever, so they get angry, instead. Then, after being angry for a while, and probably being rude to people who care about them, they feel bad and get depressed again. And they cycle repeats.

If you are in one of these cycles, you need to get out. Break the cycle. But how?

A study of stock traders showed that the traders who were most happy about their lives, were also making the best trading decisions. Do you think it was because they were trading successfully, that they were happy, or was it because they were happy, that their trading was better?

Does it matter?

If your job performance is poor, you will be less happy. If you are less happy, your performance will suffer. It is a downward spiral.

You can interrupt it by just working harder in spite of how you feel – which will probably be pretty unpleasant.

Or, you could do something to feel happier, and then your performance would be better! And this cycle also feeds itself!

What would it be worth to you, to feel happy, every day? To approach life with zest? To be the person who is always pretty happy about life? Even when things are not perfect?

Would it be worth $500 to land that new job?

Would it be worth $500 to get over that lost love, and feel great about what you had, and not be depressed about it anymore?

Would it be worth $500 to improve your sports game, or your stock trading?
